What story does your digital footprint tell?
In today’s digital-first world, your online presence often speaks before you do.
Recruiters, potential employers or clients, and collaborators are likely to Google you before inviting you to an interview or booking your service. That means the story you tell online—whether through LinkedIn, your personal website, or even Instagram—can heavily influence your career opportunities.
Curating your online presence isn’t about being fake or overly polished. It’s about making sure the version of you that lives online reflects who you really are and what you want to be known for professionally. Here’s how to start:
Step 1: Define Your Personal Brand
Before you update a single profile picture, it’s essential to get clear on your personal brand. Think of this as the story you tell the world about who you are and what you stand for. It encompasses your skills, experiences, values, and the way you show up in a professional context.
Ask yourself:
What are my core strengths and skills? (Think hard skills, soft skills, and unique experiences.)
What are my professional values and passions? (What drives you and keeps you engaged?)
What do I want to be known for in my industry? (This could be expertise, style, approach, or even personality.)
What characteristics do I want colleagues to associate with me? (For example: collaborative, innovative, detail-oriented, empathetic.)
When you can answer these questions clearly, you have the foundation for a consistent and authentic narrative across all your online platforms. This alignment helps potential employers quickly understand your value and what you bring to the table.
Step 2: Audit Your Current Online Presence
Before building your ideal online brand, you need to know where you stand. Google your name, and see what comes up. Then review all of your digital touchpoints—LinkedIn, social media accounts, blogs, websites, portfolios, and any past content still circulating.
Look at everything through the eyes of a potential employer and ask yourself:
Does this reflect my professional persona?
Are there any discrepancies or outdated information? (Old job titles, missing dates, inconsistent tone.)
Is there any content that could be perceived negatively?
This doesn’t mean scrubbing your personality from the internet. But it does mean being intentional about what you want hiring managers to see first.
A recruitment agent I once worked with, shared about a candidate who had everything going for her on paper—strong experience, excellent skills, and a glowing recommendation. But before finalising the offer, the hiring team checked her social media. A casual but critical comment she had posted about a former employer came up, and it raised red flags about professionalism and discretion. Ultimately, she was disqualified from the process.
It’s a stark reminder: employers aren’t just hiring your skills, they’re hiring your judgment and how you present yourself in the world. Even one offhand comment can carry more weight than you expect.
Step 3: Curate and Align Your Profiles
Once you’ve defined your personal brand and audited your digital footprint, the next step is to align everything. Some practical ways to do this include:
Update your LinkedIn profile with a strong headline, professional photo, and an “About” section that reflects your brand story.
Use a consistent tone and visual style across platforms—whether that’s formal, approachable, creative, or analytical.
Show your expertise. Share articles, comment on industry conversations, or post projects you’re proud of.
Prune outdated or irrelevant content. You don’t need to erase your past, but you can highlight what’s most relevant for where you’re going now.
Adjust privacy settings on personal accounts if there’s content you’d rather keep for friends and family only.
Step 4: Keep it Authentic
The most effective online presence is one that feels real. Employers don’t want a perfect cookie cutout candidate; they want to get a sense of the person behind the CV. So while it’s smart to be professional and intentional, don’t lose the quirks and personality that make you memorable.
A curated online presence isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a cohesive story that aligns with who you are, what you stand for, and where you want to go next.
