From King’s Cross to Hackney: Everything You Need to Know About Planning a Personal Brand Shoot
When you choose to do a personal brand shoot with me in London, you're signing up for more than just a photo session — you're crafting a visual story that reflects who you are, what you do, and why it matters.
London is one of the most exciting cities in the world for personal brand photography. The area from King’s Cross to Hackney offers some of my favourite places to shoot, with beautifully layered backdrops: modern architecture, gritty East London charm, canals, industrial textures, cosy cafés, and leafy pockets of green. Its mix of architecture, colour, energy and creativity means that whatever you want to express — boldness, warmth, professionalism, rebelliousness, serenity or playfulness — there will be a backdrop that fits.
But with so many options, planning a shoot can feel overwhelming.
Where should you go?
What should you wear?
How do you choose locations that truly reflect your brand?
That’s exactly where I come in.
Every Brand Story shoot begins long before I lift the camera. My process is designed to help you feel seen, supported and confident — so the images we create feel like an honest expression of you and the business you’ve built.
Below, I’ll walk you through how I help you prepare, the locations I often recommend, and two case studies of clients who brought their stories to life — from the architectural lines of King’s Cross to the soulful textures of Hackney.
Step 1. Preparing for Your Personal Brand Shoot
You’ll start with my in-depth brand questionnaire. It’s designed to uncover your personality, values, mission, vision, audience, vibe and the emotional quality you want your images to carry.
This isn’t a surface-level checklist — it’s the foundation of everything we create together.
Understanding your brand at this depth shapes:
the locations we choose
the colours and textures we look for
the mood and pacing of the shoot
the stories we tell through your images.
Clients often say that the questionnaire alone gives them clarity on how they want to show up.
Once you’ve completed it, we’ll have a call to shape your creative direction. Together, we explore the story you want to tell, where your brand is headed, and how you want your audience to feel when they encounter your work.
Step 2. Choosing Locations That Reflect Your Brand
Once I have your completed questionnaire, we’ll talk through ideas on a planning call. This is where we explore locations and I help you choose the spots that bring the right atmosphere, mood and visual language to your images.
Here’s a curated guide to some of the locations I often work in — each chosen for the stories they can tell.
King’s Cross — Sleek, Modern, Architectural
Perfect if your brand leans towards:
• polished
• contemporary
• corporate professional
• design-led
• creative-minimalist.
Think: glass façades, geometric lines, canal-side paths, metal structures — and the architectural drama of Coal Drops Yard and Gasholder Park.
Coal Drops Yard offers a beautiful blend of industrial textures and modern form: arched brickwork, metal beams, layered walkways and bold contrasts. Around the corner, the calm of Regent’s Canal and pockets of greenery allow for softer, more reflective moments.
This area is especially versatile for brands that want a balance of structure and warmth.
Hackney + Shoreditch — Creative, Earthy, Textured
Ideal for brands that are:
• soulful
• community-driven
• artistic
• grounded
• alternative or independent
• community focused.
Expect: exposed brick, street art, warehouse spaces, natural light, plants, curated interiors, creative corners.
From raw, airy exposed-brick interiors (perfect for editorial and lifestyle-brand shoots) to the historic architecture of Shoreditch Town Hall or the styled spaces in converted warehouses, East London has endless opportunities among its alleyways, cafés and character-filled streets.
Broadway Market is a personal favourite — I used to live just off it — and it brings warmth and personality through:
• independent cafés with cosy interiors
• pastel storefronts and local texture
• gentle weekday calm or weekend buzz, depending on your brand’s tone.
Brick Lane — Vibrant, Expressive, Multicultural
Ideal for brands that are:
• bold
• eclectic
• expressive
• multicultural
• rebellious.
I know this area well as I worked nearby for many years at the British Red Cross and trained at the London Institute of Photography at the Truman Brewery.
Brick Lane is full of character: street art, markets, colour, energy and a sense of creative freedom.
Whether you want edge, vibrancy or cultural richness, I’ll guide you through the quieter pockets where we can shoot uninterrupted, as well as the livelier spots that add movement and life.
Just look at all these fabulous textures that can be found in and around Brick Lane!
Step 3. Choosing and Styling Outfits
Your outfits help anchor your visual identity — not in a fashion-pressure way, but in how they support your story.
The insight from your questionnaire helps us choose outfits that feel aligned.
I’ll guide you through:
• selecting outfits that reflect your brand vibe
• creating contrast or harmony with our locations
• practical considerations for comfort and movement
• choosing props or meaningful objects (journals, tools, books, products).
You can send me photos of your outfits and I’ll help curate a set that will photograph beautifully.
Step 4. A Shoot Plan That Flows
I’ll create a clear, intentional shoot plan — locations, outfits and flow — so the day feels relaxed, grounded and enjoyable. You’ll receive this ahead of time so we’re fully aligned.
On the day, you’ll always know what’s happening next, and I’ll always be guiding.
This is an example plan:
On the day, you don’t need to worry about posing or what to do with your hands. I’ll guide you gently through:
natural movements
flattering angles
candid moments
storytelling frames
a variety of portrait, lifestyle and detail shots.
We follow our plan, but leave space for spontaneity — the magic often happens between the planned moments.
Step 5. The Shoot Day — Relaxed, Structured, Collaborative
Client Stories: How Locations + Strategy Come Together
Case Study 1: She’s Lost Control — Conscious Lifestyle Brand
She’s Lost Control blends spirituality, community and activism. Founder Jill Urwin is on a mission to build a conscious lifestyle brand with a modern approach to wellness.
“The world of alternative wellness often made me feel like I didn’t fit in or know enough,” Jill told me. “So I decided to create a space that felt fresh, accessible and supportive — modernising the narrative.”
Their Hackney shop, with its calming textures and soft light, created the perfect setting to capture:
• product storytelling
• founder and team portraits
• their ritualistic, sensory energy
• the connection between space and brand purpose.
We focused on natural materials, soft tonal palettes and emotive storytelling to reflect their modern, mystical identity.
Every detail was chosen to represent their grounded yet ethereal world.
Case Study 2: Nicole — Photographer
Nicole specialises in natural, relaxed family photography and warm, grounded professional portraits.
For her shoot, we created a route from Coal Drops Yard to Regent’s Canal and Broadway Market, that reflected the full spectrum of her brand:
Coal Drops Yard gave us structured architectural lines and neutral tones — a modern counterbalance to her soft, relational style.
Regent’s Canal brought calm, movement and nature through leafy paths, bridges and reflections.
Broadway Market cafés added intimacy, warmth and texture — perfect for capturing the cosy, authentic quality of her work.
Together, these locations showcased Nicole’s brand as multifaceted: thoughtful, creative, natural and deeply human.
Understanding Costs: How to Budget for Your Personal Brand Shoot
Planning a shoot isn’t just about locations and outfits — it’s also about understanding the costs so you can make intentional choices. The good news is that there are flexible options, depending on the level of control and aesthetic you want.
1. Your Investment: The Brand Story Shoot
My Brand Story Shoot is designed to give you a thoughtful, strategic and beautifully crafted set of images that reflect who you are and what your brand stands for.
You’ll find full details and pricing on my Brand Story page.
For many clients, this is the primary investment. Everything else — locations, styling, logistics — can flex with your needs.
2. Free Locations: London’s Public Spaces
London offers an incredible wealth of free locations that can give us huge visual variety:
• canal paths
• parks and green spaces
• markets (outdoors)
• riverside areas
• design-led public spaces
• colourful backstreets and alleys
Pros:
• no booking fees
• natural, relaxed atmosphere
• endless backdrops
Things to be aware of:
Public spaces aren’t private — if that feels daunting, I’ll support you with mindset tools so you feel grounded.
They can get busy; I’ll guide you on ideal timings.
If we’re moving through multiple locations, we’ll carry outfits and props and make use of nearby cafés or facilities for changes.
3. Shooting in Cafés: Low-Cost, Creative and Warm
Cafés can add intimacy and everyday warmth to your shoot. Many places — particularly around Broadway Market — offer cosy textures and great light.
Most cafés won’t charge if we’re discreet and buy a drink.
A few notes:
• some cafés don’t allow photography, so flexibility is key
• I often scout options and check lighting beforehand
• weekday mornings are ideal
• we always have backups nearby.
4. Paid Locations & Studios: When You Need Privacy or a Specific Look
If your brand requires full control, privacy or a very specific aesthetic, hiring a space is often the best choice.
Options include:
• natural-light studios
• converted warehouses
• exposed-brick lofts
• styled apartments
• ritual or wellness spaces
Typical costs:
• Small studios: £35–£60/hr
• Mid-sized studios: £60–£120/hr
• High-end designer spaces: £120–£300/hr
• Full-day hire: £300–£1,000+
You can find beautifully curated spaces through platforms like Silverspace Studios.
Why choose a paid space?
• consistent light
• privacy
• weather-proof
• intentional styling
• full control over the environment
For brands like She’s Lost Control, this type of environment was essential to expressing their visual identity.
Final Advice on Budgeting
• Start with your brand goals — your budget should support your story.
• You don’t need everything — one thoughtfully chosen space can be enough.
• Flexibility helps, especially with cafés or busy public areas.
• Strong brand imagery is a long-term investment that pays back many times over.
My role is to help you navigate all of this with clarity so you can invest in what will truly move your brand forward.
