In 2012, a food crisis developed in the Sahel region of north Africa.
Agro-pastoralists in Tin Akof, northern Burkina Faso, were some of those hardest hit when erratic rains resulted in a poor harvest, little pasture for livestock and little resources to buy food in the market where the price of a bag of millet more than doubled since the previous year.
The Burkinabe Red Cross distributed food vouchers that enabled people to procure the following items from local traders:
15 kilos millet
15 kilos rice
1 kilo sugar
1 kilo salt
1 ltr oil
